My mother's parent's immigrated from Sicily in the early-mid 1900's. They spent many years in Detroit before moving to California. My grandmother's maiden name was Calderone, my grandfather was a Siragusa. I spent a week in Sicily this summer. We stayed in a small fishing village outside of Palermo called Isole delle Femine. This is a nice town full of friendly people. Sicly is beautiful and has ALOT to offer. It far exceeded my expectations! My favorite places were Montereale, Erice and Taormina. We didn't get to Siracusa. We tried to locate relative, unfortunately we did not have enough information. I would love to hear from anyway who might know any Calderone's or Siragusa's. GO TO SICILY! YOU WILL LOVE IT! BE PROUD.

My mother's family was from Caltanissetta, Sicily. I was born and raised in Lodi, NJ, which was 95% Sicilian/Italian back in the 50/60's. I heard Sicilian at home for about my first 10 years, until my grandparents and mother's siblings starting passing away. Even though I have never been to Italy or Sicily, I have always proudly identified myself as a Sicilian-American. I will always carry the love and inner spirit of my Sicilian mother and her immediate family. I enjoy my occasional visits with Club Siciliano because we all have the same spirit in common. I look forward to the opportunity to make new friends with my fellow Sicilian-Americans as well as with those still in Sicily. Was to Sicily for 10 days in April. A good time to go. 50 -70 degrees. Jolly Tour all around island very good. 7-8 days Used Am Express in Palermo - (Ruggerio) as agent. - excellent. Also toured Southern Italy on this trip. Good, well marked roads- even the secondaries. ( Drove 3 days to visit middle of island.) Have maps witheven footpaths marked. obtained from Sililian Tourist Agency - excellent Felt comfortable the whole time. Excellent Greek ruins and scenery there in all directions.

As a third generation Italian-American, I have found my family to be strong, but have struggled most of my life to recover the heritage--especially of language--which I heard too little of in Italian or dialetto Siciliano as a child. I've studied roughly 1 1/2 years of college Italian. Researched the genealogy of my family lines in Sicily, Campobasso (prov), and Salerno (prov) back in some cases to nearly 1700. This resulted in an interested in European history, and the particular histories of each region, more use of the language in reading, research and correspondence, and seeking more opportunities to use it. At the same time, I enjoyed the etymology of names for places and peoples, and made this, as well as heraldry and nobility, part of my research. I believe that we, each individually, and as a group, can make a difference in the consciousness of fellow Italian/Sicilians and all peoples upon this earth. My interests also include cuisine, wines, music, reading of philosophy, religion, metaphics etc., and mysticism. But my greatest hope is that I can achieve, doing more than merely surviving, and find or be found by the next great love of my life. For her I am either looking, or waiting for the fulmine to strike me.

I think I am very fortunate to have learned to speak Sicilian at home, and now as an adult to speak Italian. Going to Sicily is an experience unlike anyother. You can feel the love, the culture, and a great sense of pride to come from such a beautiful place. It is truly mystical. I think some people, sicilians themselves go to Sicily and forget that it is not supposed to be like the US. That is what makes it special and unique. So what the streets are narrow, there is very little hot water, and mass confusion at times; these are all the things that make it special. I was born in Sicily, we came to America when I was under a year old. I grew up in the Sicilian traditions since my parents were firm in their beliefs. My father would not answer me if I spoke to him in English because he wanted me to remember the our language. When I turned 12 he would help me compose letters to our family in Italy. When I was 16, I returned to Sicily to meet my family for the first time....that summer I met my husband, Salvatore. We have been married 26 years and we have four wonderful children and one wonderful granddaughter! We work together all day at our salon and come home together as well! My paternal grandparents had actually come to America in 1900. They lived in Washington, DC. My grandfather Giovanni Tomasello, was a mosaic tilesetter and worked on the Capital Rotunda and other splendid historical buildings in DC! After my Uncle Joe was born in 1911 my grandmother's health was failing and they returned to Sicily....My Uncle Joe learned of his American birthright and returned when he was 17... I am currently writing about their story, my story. I hope to make it a screenplay so that others will know that not all Sicilians are "Mafioso" or cutthroat thugs, just hard-working, family oriented people who love life and the challenges they endured in trying to provide for them.

My Grandmother, Angelica Catalfamo came from Catania, my great-grandfather from Messina, Sicily in 1906. My grandfather was born in NYC, where he met my Grandmother who came over from Sicily with her brother. My father Joseph was the oldest of 7 boys and 3 girls.
