My fatherwas born in Ranadzzo, Sicily a very strategically located Medieval city which is within view and the flow of lava from Mt. Etna. I was born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn N.Y. I have been to Sicily twice to visit my father's sisters and my several cousins and second cousins. My family from Sicily have visited us here in America also. In fact, I am expecting them to come again this June. My children wantto visit their again. My son "promises" that when he is grown,he will take us all to Sicily to live in his big house. My parents never spoke to us in Italian. They used their native tongue to speak with friends and to discuss things which they did not want us to know about. As a result I am able to understand a great deal more in Italian than I am able to speak. Fortunately, my wife is relatively fluent in Spanish and Italian and slowly she is helping me and my children acquire the language of our roots. I live in Rockland County N.Y. but my heart is in Sicily. The internet has helpd to bring me and my Sicilian relatives closer than ever before. We write e-mails at least once a week and telphone each other about twice a month. Interestingly, My first haircut and all those of my youth were performed by Joseph Pignato who had a Barbarshop on Bay Parkway near 86th Street.
My grandparents were born in an area of the city of Messina known as SS Annunziata. Giuseppe Ciccolo and Marianna Todaro. They came to Boston in the early 1900's. I am still living in Massachusetts. Other Sicilian names I am looking for are Arena, Giacoppo, Arno, Scaduto.
My grandfather is from Comune di Siculiana, Prov. Agrigento. My grandmother is from Comune di Santa Margherita di Belice, Prov. Agrigento. My father was born in Brooklyn, NY and I was born in Elizabeth, NJ. My father and I both carry dual citizenship and travel as often as possible to Sicily. We still have family scattered throughout Italy.
my family came from BOGETTO, Sicily starting with my great-grandfather, Michele Zangara. He was followed by great grandmother, Antonina LoCalio and their two children, my grandfather Andrea and his sister Petronilla (Tedesco). I am active in genealogy and a member of POINT. Any Italian/Sicilian working in or interested in genealogy will benefit from being a member of POINT. http://members.aol.com/pointhompg/home.htm I live in Kansas City, KS I would like to hear from other people with ties to Borgetto.
Both sets of grandparents came from Melilli, Siciliy. I am second generation Sicilian-American and so proud of it. Isn't it funny how we are the only Italians who distinguish ourselves. I have, even as a child. Always Sicilian.

I am a practicing Chiropractor in Garden City,Long Island NY.I was born in Brooklyn and both sets of Grandparents are from the Palermo area-the last names are DiGrazia(mother's side) and Crescione(father's side)
My grandfather was born in Rodi-Milici,Messina in 1864. He used to tell me about his family with nobility titles, and about a Staiti town in sothern Calabria founded by one of our uncestors Andreotta Staiti back in 1571. At the end of 1800 my grandfather moved to Argentina, thats my native country, and since 1993 I am doing research on my surname. Next month I am taking my family to Sicily to visit places that my uncestors have left in that region.
I was born and raised in the New York area. My father's family lived in Pittsfield, Mass. Both of my paternal grandparents came from Sicily in the 1890's. I know very little, but have done a little research of my roots. My grandmother's maiden name was Montanaro, her mother's was Tamborella. My grandfather may have come from Isnello. He spoke of "Greek" roots. I grew up in New York with my mother's family who came from the region of Salerno. So I understood their dialect, and not Sicilian. I visited eastern Sicily two years ago and felt a great affinity for the Island and its people. I am a student of history and am interested in finding out more about my family there. I am interested in learning the language and taking classes - art, history, architecture. I would appreciate any leads anyone might have. I read Mary Taylor's Simeti's book, On Persphone's Island, before my trip and found it to be a wonderful introduction to Sicily. I look forward to returning to the island soon. I am an educational evalator and will be retiring in July, 20001. I am separated.
My family came from Sicily. My surnames and towns are: Billelo, Ferrantelli, Gendusa, Giangalanti and Giordano from Chiusa Sclafani, LaFata from Partinico, and Maltese and Messina from Sto. Stefano Quisquina.

Born in Niagara Falls, New York, both parents of Sicilian descent. Both sets of grandparents from Sicily, different regions. Valentis' from Caltanisetta and the Pusateris' from Termini Imerese. Very proud of my heritage and although I am known as an Italian I am Sicilian first. Moved to the West Coast 21 years ago with my wife and family and love it! Want to continue to keep in touch with my heritage, I am a member of Arba Sicula and am always searching for information about my roots.

I have two children who also were born in Catania and who love Sicily very much. They are part Italian from my side and part American from their father side. We try to go to Sicily every year for Christmas, but my parents come over here very often to visit us.
born in brooklyn n.y.
I am Sicilian-American born in East Brunswick, NJ. My Mother is from San Giovanni Gemini, in the Provincia di' Agregento, Sicily. My Father, while born in Jersey City, NJ, was Sicilian. He left America and went to Sicily right before the Great Depression, met my Mother, and was married 51 years to the day of his death. I am so proud to be Sicilian. I would love to learn the language. Growing up I learned a mixture of Italian & Sicilian...but have never become fluent in either. I would love to meet and become friends with anyone who has a love for our heritage! Ciao, Paisani!
My paternal grandmother and both my maternal grandparents were from Casteltermini. They all came to America around the same time, between 1915 and 1920. My maternal grandfather's name wa Francesco Chimera.

My great-grandparents emigrated from Ali, Sicily in the early twentieth century. They settled in upstate New York (Syracuse area), where I was born and raised. I am now researching my family tree, and any insight or tips for finding Sicilian records would be greatly appreciated. Also, I would like to offer my help for others constructing a family tree. I know of most of the resources available in the U.S.
I was born in America. I am not 100% Italian (persian and Irish also) but I am a Sicilian. My Italian side (the only side I've actually known) came from Canicatti in Sicily and a suburb of Napoli. Supposedly I am descended from Sicilian nobility and my family name is well known on the island, as I found out when I was there. I think that there is a castle for my family in Canicatti. Go to Sicily and be proud of your heritage, it is as rich and great as any other and then some more too. Noi Siciliani siamo una brava gente ed abbiamo le beste ragazze del mondo. Abbiamo una cultura forte, siamo una gente fort. We mustn't allow ourselves to be depicted as ugly Mafia hoods when we are actually a goodlooking honorable people with a culture like none other. If there are any paesani from Canicatti or anywhere else in Sicily out there that wants to talk about the old country, please feel free to contact me. As a matter of fact, my father is sending me to Sicily this summer for work and education in more advanced Italian. Ci Vediamo e Ciao paesani!
I was born here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have ancestry from the Catania region in Sicily as well as some from Northern Italy.
I currently hold a BA in History, Italian Studies and Political Science. I also am currently working on my Master's degree in Library and Information Science and Foreign Language and Literature (based on Italian and Sicilian studies) Even though I am no where near being full-blooded, I still hold a great interest and pride in my heritages. I worked for five years as a general manager/cook in a Sicilian family restaurant (so this helped me with my language skills).

I was born in Sicily, Cianciana prov. (AG). I've lived in England for approx. 32 years. My profession is that of a Social Worker. I would love to hear from anyone that knows me, or my family.
I was born in Boston Mass. I do not know which city my family history stems from. All I know is that we are from Sicily. Though I was not raised in the Italian culture, due to a turbulant home life, I find many of my inner feelings and even mannerisms connect me with my Italian ancestry. My desire is to learn more about my history thus learn more about myself.
My dad's side of the family is orignially from Norweigh (sorry about the spelling) and they moved here long ago when the norwegians came to Sicily. My grandfather came to America when he was 7 from Graniti(sp?), Sicily. I was born in up-state NY. My granfather was pretty determined to be an American, leaving his children & grandchildren to find out about their Sicilian heritage from other sources.

I am 100% Sicilian though I was born/raised in Houston, Texas. The cities of my Sicilian ancestry include: Corleone, Busicina, Salaparuta, and Mejaguzadi (I have NO idea if I spelled those right). It was my great-grandparents who came to American from Italy. My grandparents, parents, and myself were all born/raised here in America.
I presently live in Manhasset, NY and am in high school. Both my parents were born in a town called Alcamo, Sicily and immigrated to the States at ages 8 and 13. Both my parents speak Sicilian and taught me a bit when I was born, but have since ceased speaking it at home. All my relatives speak Sicilian and almost all live in Alcamo, Sicily. For those who have read On Persephone's Island by Mary Taylor Simeti, it is about my town and when she writes about Bosco it is a part of then town between the town part and beach part of it. It is believed by my family that we are distantly related to her husband, but it has yet to be confirmed. I would like to learn Sicilian fluently, since I can only speak an adequate amount and all my relatives speak mainly Sicilian. I have been to Sicily on numerous occasions, and I am open to questioning by anyone who wishes to know about my town or anything surrounding it.

I am a semiretired legal secretary, and live in Shreveport, La. Finding this web site made my day. I'm so glad others share my sentiments in preserving our Italian heritage. I'm 100% Southern, but Southern Sicilians are really no different, except our accent. I lived up North for several years, and discovered we are all basically the same. My g/parents were from Cefalu, and I know little else about their backgrounds. My g/father was a Comrato, and my g/mother an Inzina. I would be grateful for any information anyone might have re: the families. Philip, you deserve a special award for your efforts in bringing us together. I shall be checking the web site often.

Strange but their names do not appear on the Ellis Island list.

Grazie,Thank you. Io sono nata a Siracusa,Viale Tica (in greco tukè=dea del destino)come mio padre ed i suoi parenti. Mia madre era di Acireale(Catania)come i suoi parenti. I go to Sicily every year for my summer holidays,i can speak Siciliano, Italiano, English, French and Spanish. i've just started looking at Sicilian sites. It's strange to think that there are still Sicilians in the US-i thought they had considered themselves as Americans. I am not from America(no offence but the films that the US has made have totally changed everybody's opinion about the island now), I am from Sicily but live elsewhere(not america i wish to add) I hope that a new site can be made for young Sicilians 16-25, this is really important! Please give me an email i'd love to talk in the dialect or another language, its good to see that people in America still remember who they really are.

These are in the province of Caltanisetta. My maternal grandparents were both from Termini Imerese on the coast, not far from Palermo. I hope to visit there soon.

Born in Canada, but raised as a true and proud Sicilian. I have passed this tradition down to my daughter, who acts/is more proud of her Sicilian heritage than anyone I know. We speak Sicilian in our household, and always eat ethnic. My children will be proud, Sicilian adults, and raise their kids not to be cakers. I am from the town of Pachino.

I was born in St. Louis Missour from a mother who was born in Palermo and my father from Castelvetrano.....the older that I have become the more interested I am in my heritage....when I went as far south as Naples the first time I was in Italy all the stories my Mother ever told all of us came true...the lemons, the figs, the nature of the people....plan to go to Sicily this June....and know I will be thrilled to see the country of meie genitori.
I am an expert professional sculptor having won 15 scholarshipe, fellowships and grants to date.I was born in Buffalo,N.Y. My family came from the Palermo area in 1889 and settled in Buffalo,N.Y. Although having accomplished much and contributed greatly to American society we,and myself in particular, are still experiencing considerable problems of nationality discrimination. Infact,I am seeking a competent cival rights- constitutional lawyer of sicilian descent to look into my matter which has developed into a serious one. Unfortunately, the italian americans in this area are not interested in the violation of the cival rights of sicilian americans, as amazing as that may be to others. I am also seeking a support group in my pursuit of this matter and might be interested in relocating in order to do so.
Born in Tampa, Florida, but have family roots from Santo Stefano Quisquina. Currently live in Massachusetts. I've never been to Sicily, but chomping at the bit to go. Anyone that doesn't know their roots doesn't know themselves.

My dad (Salvatore Porretto) was raised in Roccapalumba, a town outside of Palermo up in the mountains - he came to New York at the age of 17 (1923) leaving his family in Sicily. My mom, Nunziatta Palamara, was born in Lipari, island off Messina, in 1914 - her mother (Marie Giuffre Palamara) passed away when she was 14 months old. My mom and my aunt came to New York in 1921 when my mom was 7 years old. We always had contact with my father's family but did not have contact with my mother's family (Giuffre/Palamara). My dad passed away in 1979 and my mom passed away in 1994. I visited Sicily in 1990 with my daughter. All of Italy was beautiful BUT Sicily was the most beautiful. We stayed with my father's brother who was alive then and had been retired as a police officer of Palermo. He was living in Termini Imerese then and now his daughter still resides there. We visited Lipari and found the house that my mother was born in. The people in that house had the same name as my grandmother's maiden name but could offer no information. We found at that time my grandmother's grave and how touched I felt then. I was named after my maternal grandmother. WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK TO SICILY - I LEFT PART OF MY HEART THERE!!!! My husband and I just became grandparents of a beautiful baby girl named Sabine - would love to take her to Sicily when she is old enough.

Dear All, I want to wish you well!! Wow, I always wanted to start a site like this. I agree!! We need to keep our roots! I do not understand why our folk music has not been kept. Our folk music is so very important. I also do not understand why the language was not taught to the younger generation. Why were the Italian last names shortened or changed? Why has Sinatra, Martin, and Bennet have become the darlings of Italia? This is really strange. So much new, and old Italian art is just not known by our Italian and Italian American brothers and sisters here in the USA. I think it is high times to get rid of Columbus day and put an Italian who was worth the time. Or make Saint Joe day the Italian celebration. Columbus was a killer and a bad human being. I think a great tribute to the Natives here would be to get rid of the day or change the celebration. Also, as Italy has grown and is growing, there are more than one religion there now. There are 100,000 Buddhists now in Italia. These are Italian Buddhists. And other faiths too. Well, this is another topic. We first have to go back to our roots!! And I think this site is great!!! Thank you, enrico

WHILE THERE I EVEN TRIED TO GT A JOB IN THE NAVY BASE IN SINORELLA. I AM A NURSE, BUT THERE WAS TOO MUCH RED TAPE. EVERYTIME I HAD TO LEAVE I WOULD ACTUALLY CRY ON THE FLIGHT BACK TO AMERICA. I FEEL BESSED AND WOULDN'T WNT IT ANY OTHER WAY. CIAO

My father is from Napoli (di Cervinara) and my mother is Sicilian (born in Bocca di Falco). I am one of three brothers and I have a loving father and mother. I adore them both for their never endless love, sacrafice, perseverance and sense of "famiglia". I owe them my life! I came to New York, where I've lived most of my life, in 1969. I am currently living in Dutchess County, N.Y. I am employed as a Law Enforcement Officer. I think that this site and its mission is simply fantastic. I encourage any/all to contact me via e-mail to chat or discuss our most valuable heritage. Viva a biedda Sicilia! Ciao paesiani!

I was born in Rochester, N.Y. Both of my parents were born in the tiny town of Villalba, nella Provincia di Caltanissetta. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be able to trace all my family history to one town in central Sicily. I was also very fortunate to grow up bilingual knowing that Sicilian is not a dialect, but a separate language. It facilitated, for me, the learning of Italian in high school and Spanish in college. All of my father's family still lives there. I try to visit every so often. To this day, I can tell you that I feel an unbelievable euphoria when the airplane starts its descent on one of their runways. It is just beautiful there! Ciao

All of my grandparents were from Carlentini in Sicily. I was born in the USA and proud of it, but consider my heritage strictly Sicilian, not Italian. I resent the image portrayed of the Sicilians. I'm not a gangster, no one in my family is a gangster.
We are planning our first ever family reunion and working on a family tree. It's fun but frustrating too because the Ellis Island records are so flawed, and we're having trouble tracing our Nanna. Check it out (www.geocities.com/cosentinofamily/familytree.html and see if you can help. Or better yet, get addicted to the whole research thing like I have.
